Starting with the new year, your WhatsApp Backup will soon count against the storage available in your Google Drive. According to a new policy by the company, Android users will experience this change starting in the first half of 2024.

WhatsApp announced the changes in November 2023, ending the free unlimited backup available to Android users. Here is everything you need to know about this change.

According to the announcement by the Meta-owned company, everything in your WhatsApp Backup will soon consume storage on your Google Drive. This change will start in December 2023 for beta users and will slowly roll out to all Android users in the first half of 2024.

Furthermore, the company plans to display a banner 30 days before this WhatsApp backup change happens to inform users. You can check this banner in Settings->Chats->Chats Backup.

This change affects everything in your Whatsapp Chat Backup, including chat history, images, and videos that will count against the quota on your Google Drive account.

Previously, users could back up their Chat data to Google Drive without worrying about storage limits. Each Google account has a 15GB free storage limit.

According to Google, this change won’t affect users with a Google Workspace subscription via work or school. Only those with a personal Google account are likely to face the brunt.

Currently, WhatsApp backups on other platforms like iOS count against your iCloud storage quota. Each iOS user gets 5GB of free storage with the option to buy additional storage.

Android users can now choose to use the direct transfer option to transfer chats between two devices or opt to back up only text messages to save storage space. Moreover, you can also buy additional storage from Google to back up your data without worrying about the limits.
