In an official statement, authorities confirm that no decision has been made to launch a satellite-based tolling system starting May 1. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways also clarifies that neither it nor the National Highways Authority of India has approved such a move. Instead, a barrier-less tolling system using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) combined with FASTag will be introduced at select toll plazas to facilitate smoother vehicle movement.

While the news of GPS based FASTag is not true, but the upcoming system will integrate Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology with the current FASTag framework. ANPR cameras will scan vehicle license plates for identification, while FASTag’s RFID technology will handle toll payments—allowing vehicles to pass through toll plazas without stopping.
If a vehicle fails to comply with the system, electronic notices (E-Notices) will be issued. Continued non-payment may lead to FASTag suspension and other penalties under the VAHAN database.
