WhatsApp Adds Biometric Authentication on Desktop

If you use WhatsApp Desktop on a daily basis, you might be familiar with the QR Code-based Authentication needed to access WhatApp on your browser or Desktop. In case you feel insecure when using WhatsApp Web, take a look at the companies’ latest feature. WhatsApp is releasing a new feature that will let users authenticate the web or desktop client login using Biometric authentication.

The feature works with both Android as well as iOS. Although not as secure as using biometric authentication on mobile devices, it offers an alternative method to the traditional QR code-based authentication.

One important thing to keep in mind is that you will not be automatically logged out of WhatsApp Web unless you do so. This means anyone with access to your PC will be able to see your messages. Also, since it is an opt-in feature, it is not enabled by default. You will have to enable the feature from the settings menu.

If your iOS device has TouchID or FaceID, this feature will work with it. Also, all Android phones with biometric authentication are compatible with the feature.

The new feature does not replace existing QR code-based authentication. Biometric authentication provides an extra layer of security to the existing process. Users will need to authenticate using biometrics before they are able to generate the QR code.

The company is also working on a redesign for the WhatsApp Web page. The feature has just started rolling out today and might take a few weeks before it makes its way on your device.
