Vivo has apparently filed a patent for a smartphone with a unique feature. It looks like the company is working on a detachable camera module that can fly like a drone. The camera will have the ability to detach from the smartphone. In addition, fly in the air to enable users to take photos creatively. However, we already have flying drones with cameras in the market but this looks like an interesting unique feature.

Meanwhile, the patent first filed in December 2020 with the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). It has the title of ‘Electronic device’ for Vivo Mobile Communication. According to a LetsGoDigital report, the filing shows a small compartment on the top edge of the Vivo smartphone. That is where the detachable camera can slide in and out.
Vivo New Patent Shows a Unique Idea?
Furthermore, looking at the patent images – the design appears similar to that of a modern smartphone. However, its most notable feature is the detachable flying camera that pops out from the bottom of the Vivo device. In other words, this flying camera is essentially housing in the handset when not in use and is not a separate peripheral.
This camera has four propellers to take it up in the air, a battery compartment for solo flying purposes, and a double camera system – with one sensor taking the front aerial view while the other capturing footage below. It also notes that the camera system inside the Vivo smartphone can slide out completely from the housing together with the mounting bracket.

Vivo new patent also talks regarding this flying camera is the inclusion of two infrared sensors on different sides of the module. These sensors could serve many different functions. However, their primary objective is likely to keep the small drone from bumping into other objects when flying. Moreover, the patent notes that the flying camera can be controlled using the smartphone. It is likely to offer air gesture support as well. Whereas, the sketch shows two cameras attached to the module. There are chances that patent notes that a third and fourth camera can also be added.
