Several major publishers in PC and console gaming have started expanding to mobile by adapting established franchises. Activision Blizzard, which recently got acquired by Microsoft (pending regulatory approval), has now confirmed that Warcraft is coming to mobile devices later this year.
Blizzard had previously revealed that a Warcraft mobile game is in development, but it hadn’t announced any release window. Considering that the publisher is expecting the launch this year, the game might be in its final stages of development. Alongside, World of Warcraft and Hearthstone will get new content this year. In its quarterly earnings report, Blizzard revealed that it is “planning substantial new content for the Warcraft franchise in 2022. Including new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone, and getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time.”
Currently, it’s unclear what you can expect from the game in terms of gameplay, lore, genre, and more. Blizzard had previously revealed that there are multiple free-to-play Warcraft mobile games in development. The company’s CEO Bobby Kotick had then confirmed that these games are in “advanced development.” Rumours also hint at a Pokemon Go-style AR game design for the upcoming mobile. However, Blizzard hasn’t shared any details about the project yet.
