Samsung is reputed for its innovation in camera technology and for introducing them in its flagship phones. The S23 Ultra featured a quad camera setup with a 200-megapixel primary with 100x zoom. In its quest to constantly innovate, the company is now working on massive camera sensors.

According to a tweet by tipster Revegnus, Samsung is working on a new lineup of ISOCELL sensors. These will release by the latter half of 2024. The company is developing four new sensors: a 50-megapixel ISOCELL GN6 with 1.6-micron pixels, a 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP7 with 0.6-micron pixels, an unnamed 320-megapixel and 440-megapixel ISOCELL HU1.

The 50-megapixel GN6 sensor is the company’s biggest sensor, with a 1-inch sensor size. It will rival the likes of Sony’s IMX989, making it ideal for flagship devices. Next is the 200-megapixel ISOCELL HP7 featuring a sensor with 0.6μm size. This makes it a likely successor to the 200-megapixel HP2 sensor found in the S23 Ultra.

The third sensor, a 320-megapixel one that remains unnamed, could potentially come with the S26 Ultra. The MediaTek Dimensity 9200 processor does support 320-megapixel sensors leaving the door open for future flagships.

Samsung is also working on a monstrous 440-megapixel sensor that might be bigger than the 1-inch GN6 sensor. But, it is unclear whether the sensor will debut on smartphones as the company also develops sensors for cars with assisted driving features.

Will These Sensors Arrive On A Future Samsung Phone?

The tipster further adds that despite developing these sensors, Samsung is unlikely to incorporate them in its upcoming smartphones. Manufacturers in the Greater China region could use the 50-megapixel GN6 sensor. It is reported that Samsung dropped the plan to use the 200-megapixel HP7 sensor for the Galaxy S25 Ultra due to its high cost.
