OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, recently fired its CEO, Sam Altman and replaced him with CTO Mira Murati. The announcement surprised the tech industry and led to a new turmoil within OpenAI.

It also led to widespread support for Sam Altman as reports claimed he was planning to start a new venture. After a series of resignations within the company, it is now in talks with its former CEO to return to the helm.

OpenAI In Talks With Sam Altman To Return As CEO

According to a report by The Verge, the Open AI board is discussing with Sam Altman to return to the company as the CEO. Furthermore, the report claims Sam is “ambivalent” about his return and would require “significant governance changes”.

Moreover, it claims the entire OpenAI board has offered in principle to resign to pave the way for former CEO Sam Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman to come back. However, there is no clarity on its decision as it failed to meet the 5 PM PT deadline, after which many OpenAI staffers were to resign.

Furthermore, a cryptic post by the former CEO on X (Formerly Twitter) saying, “I love the openai team so much”, has led to further speculation about his possible return. The interim CEO, Mira Murati, also replied to the tweet with a blue heart emoji.

The OpenAI board fired its CEO, Sam Altman, late Friday without giving him prior notice. This led to a shockwave across the tech industry as the announcement surprised many, including OpenAI employees.

In a blog post, Open AI stated, “Altman’s departure follows a deliberative review process by the board, which concluded that he was not consistently candid in his communications with the board, hindering its ability to exercise its responsibilities”.

It further said, “The board no longer has confidence in his ability to continue leading OpenAI.” Greg Brockman, the co-founder and president of OpenAI, also resigned after being removed from the board.

The company said it was in a search process to identify a permanent successor as it appointed CTO Mira Murati as the interim CEO. In a post on X, Sam Altman said, “If I start going off, the openai board should go after me for the full value of my shares.”

Who is Sam Altman?

As news spread of his dismissal, the former CEO Sam Altman received support and praise worldwide. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt called him “a hero of mine” and said, “He built a company from nothing to $90 Billion in value, and changed our collective world forever”.

Reports claim he was planning to start his venture after getting fired from OpenAI and has been in talks with former Apple design chief Jony Ive. Softbank CEO Masayoshi Son is also claimed to be involved in the venture.
