Ookla Report: 5G Speed Jumps To 500 Mbps In India

  • The India Mobile Congress(IMC) 2022 was held early this month. During this event, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio announced the launch of 5G services in the selected cities of the country. Ookla’s Speedtest Intelligence report says that the 5G speed hits 500 Mbps on test networks.

    This report claims that across the 5G testing phase last month, the network speeds were as low as 16.27 Mbps and as high as 809.94 Mbps. This is a sign that telecom providers are still balancing their networks.

    The Ookla Speedtest Intelligence report studied the median 5G download speeds in the four cities where both Jio and Airtel are accessible. As the 5G speed hits 500 Mbps. So the reports claim that in Delhi, Airtel 5G runs at a median speed of nearly 200 Mbps. On the other hand, Jio has a median speed of 600 Mbps.

    Kolkata has Airtel’s median download speed of just 33.83 Mbps while Jio had a download speed of 482.02 Mbps. Then, in Mumbai, Airtel has a median download speed of 271.07 Mbps but Jio had 515.38 Mbps.

    However, the only city Airtel and Jio came in close to was Varanasi. It had Airtel running on a 516.57 Mbps median speed and Jio on 485.22 Mbps. But the speeds are much higher if compared to 4G LTE.

    5G Speed Hits 500 Mbps In Test Network

    India has been ranked 117 by the company’s Speedtest Global Index report. It has an average 13.52 mobile download speed. However, changes are expected in the future when 5G will roll out in the country.

    The recent consumer survey of Ookla suggests that 89 per cent of Indian smartphone users are ready to upgrade their devices to 5G.

    The Data from Ookla’s Speedtest app users states that Jio has witnessed the largest increase with over 67.4 per cent of phones with 5G capability. This is close to Airtel’s 61.6 per cent and Vodafone-Idea’s 56 per cent.
