    Unified OS

Last year in June, OnePlus formally joined hands with OPPO in hopes of building “even better products” for its customers. But months later, OnePlus took things to the next level and announced a new “unified OS”. A cumulation of OnePlus’ OxygenOS and OPPO’s ColorOS. Yes, the same unified OS that’s rumoured to be known as H2OOS.

Now, until today, we expected the unified OS to debut this year with the company’s flagship device. However, OnePlus announced OxygenOS 13, creating more uncertainty over the arrival of the unified OS. But finally, OnePlus has now confirmed combined OS isn’t coming and global devices will continue to run OxygenOS.

In a new blog post discussing OnePlus’ future, Pete Lau confirms rumours that OxygenOS 13 will split from ColorOS. The decision appears to be permanent. While OxygenOS and ColorOS will continue to share their codebase and three-year update cycle, the operating systems will “remain independent brand properties.”

But one should note that OxygenOS 13 may still feel a bit different from previous OxygenOS releases. Pete Lau says that OnePlus wants “to deliver an experience that long-time OnePlus users will be familiar with.” However, it could prove to be difficult considering how OxygenOS now shares a codebase with ColorOS.

Notably, Pete Lau also states that the OnePlus 10 Pro, currently a China-exclusive, will see a global launch in March. While this phone ships with OxygenOS 12, it will receive OxygenOS 13 in a future update.
