Now and again, dangerous malware finds its way into the Google Play Store. For example, according to new research from cyber security firm Trend Micro, more than 200 Android applications on Google Play Store include a dangerous malware dubbed Facestealer, which may steal users’ data and their Facebook passwords and other information.

At Trend Micro, we discovered more than 40 bogus cryptocurrency miner applications attempting to steal crypto money and capture personal information without the user’s consent and more than 200 apps that included Facestealer malware. In the study, several of these applications had more than 100,000 downloads.

Apps including Panorama Camera, Business Meta Manager, Swam Photo, Enjoy Photo Editor, Cryptomining Farm Your Coin, and Photo Gaming Puzzle were gathering private user information without their knowledge.

These applications have tens of thousands or perhaps hundreds of thousands of downloads. According to the study, Google quickly deleted face stealer-infected applications as they were made aware of the problem. So smartphone owners need to remove any of these applications from their devices as soon as possible to prevent them from collecting further personal information.

Likely similar situations got reported in which Google has wiped out thousands of applications infected with malware.

You should always use apps made by legitimate firms instead of unofficial ones. Also, you should check the developer’s name’s always a good idea to look at the app’s rating first.

Don’t provide any personal information to any app, such as your phone number. The app’s information page is an excellent place to begin your research. The Play Store and other certified applications are the only places to get apps.
