Facebook’s exponential growth in these years is a story of its own. But Facebook intends to change its name officially to suit its focus and intentions, according to a report by The Verge. They are planning to rebrand itself. Moreover, these plans may come out at the company’s upcoming Connect conference, scheduled for October 28, 2021.

According to The Verge, this is in line with Facebook seeking to put clear emphasis on plans with its metaverse. A virtual world around computers and related to the internet. However, in a nod towards the future that all sci-fi films have showed (or warned) us. The metaverse will be one that’s accessible via AR, VR and related technologies. This is the reason why Facebook name change will be in the cards.

Although Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg will likely still remain at the top in his conglomerate. This rebranding is seemingly of a similar kind as that of Google and Alphabet. In this instance, the latter formed as the parent company, and Google alongside a number of other ventures — some experimental in nature — made up the entire group’s corporate structure.

Under a similar layout, Facebook, Instagram, Oculus and WhatsApp will form some of the Facebook group’s main sub-companies in this umbrella layout. Now, Facebook name change can bring with it a host of new benefits that Zuckerberg’s future endeavours can greatly benefit from. Well, the company is steadily laying the groundwork for a greater focus on the next generation of technology.

For instance, Horizon, the name of an unreleased Facebook project, changed to Horizon Worlds. This happened after Facebook had shown off a workplace collab platform called Horizon Workrooms. Facebook has also been growing and diversifying in the quest to be recognized as more than just a social media company. Recently, Andrew Bosworth, head of AR and VR, promoted to the position of CTO. It also came along with an announcement of Facebook’s plans to induct 10,000 employees in Europe for the metaverse project.
