DMRC undertook a significant and technically demanding task to enhance its Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) gates. This upgrade involved implementing a user-friendly, cashless, and efficient ticketing system. It is reported that the entire process was accomplished without any disruption to passenger services. DMRC successfully completed this challenging endeavour, ensuring continuous operation of the AFC Gates across all corridors. Currently, DMRC has upgraded over 60 per cent of AFC gates by integrating QR code scanners so that the user can buy a Delhi metro QR ticket. Upgrades to the remaining AFC gates are planned for the next month or two. This coordinated effort by the DMRC aims to ensure that all AFC gates on the network are equipped with QR code scanning technology to facilitate smooth ticketing and entry for passengers.

As mentioned above, there are currently two main ways to board the Delhi Metro. Either you get a token from the ticket counter or get a metro card.

  • Earlier physical tokens used to be issued that were scanned from the boarding station and then dispensed at the exit station. That practice has now changed to a paper token with a QR code that can be scanned at both the arrival and destination stations and then thrown away.

The card is topped up with a minimum balance of Rs 200 and then can be recharged at the station whenever the balance runs out via the ticket counter or through the AVM machines. Apps like Paytm do allow you to recharge the card on the fly, but usually, it takes multiple attempts, and the outcome is not a given.
