WhatsApp for iOS has rolled out an update that will allow users to multitask while on a video call. With Picture-in-Picture (PiP) functionality, users can now access other apps on their phone while keeping the video call running on a minimized window. The feature was previously available for the Android version of the app. However, for iOS devices, the app paused the user’s video stream when the app was minimised or the user switched to another app. The release notes for the latest stable version on the App Store announced that the app now supports PiP on iOS as well.
“With support for iOS Picture in Picture (PiP) you can now multitask during a WhatsApp call without your video being paused,” the changelog reads.” Sources suggest that you can access the new feature after updating WhatsApp for iOS 23.3.77.

WhatsApp Picture-In-Picture Update: More Details
It is to note that Apple added support for PiP mode in 2020 with the release of iOS 14. While Google added support back in 2017, by releasing Android 8 which is known as Android Oreo. However, third-party Android apps were able to gain access to PiP mode faster than their iOS counterparts. Whereas, users on iOS were able to minimise video playback to a floating window in the second half of 2022.
Apart from PiP functionality, the update also allows users to add captions to documents while sharing them. Previously, captions were only available for images and videos. Users on iOS can also enter longer subjects and descriptions for group chats. These features were already available on Android devices. However, the ability to share up to 100 images or videos at a time, which was part of the Android update, is not part of the latest iOS update.
Moreover, WhatsApp also allows users to create avatars as stickers and use them as their profile pictures. The company announced this feature in December along with the release of 36 customizable stickers based on user-generated avatars.
