  • As Google said last month, all call recording applications have been removed from the Google Play store with effect from May 11, 2022, when the new Play Store policy comes into force. There will be no changes to mobile apps that already can record calls.

The Cupertino-based tech behemoth has long opposed calling recording applications and services. That’s because the corporation considers recording phone conversations a breach of privacy. Both parties hear a loud “this call is now being recorded” notice before it starts to record on Google’s Dialer app because of the same.

Google says that only third-party applications would get any effect by the change. This implies that the Google Dialer will still work if call recording is supported on your device or area. Additionally, this explains that any preloaded Dialer software with this capability will operate just fine. It will remove only Google Play store applications with the functionality.

Truecaller confirmed the removal of the call recording capability from its platform only one day after Google declared the ban on applications. “We are no longer allowed to provide call records because of the new Google Developer Program restrictions”. However, according to a Truecaller spokesman, this won’t impact handsets that already have call recordings.

“Based on overwhelming user demand, we had implemented call recording on all Android devices.” To record a call on Truecaller, you had to utilise the Google Accessibility API, free and permission-based.

It will first disable the in-call audio recording through the microphone on Android 6 and then Android 10. However, the Accessibility Service may still get access by specific applications on smartphones running Android 10 or above, allowing them to record phone conversations. As a result, Google decided to restrict all respective applications from its Play store.
