The Tomb Raider franchise is easily one of the most successful series in not just the gaming but the entertainment industry as well. When the franchise received a reboot in the form of Tomb Raider 2013, it was a massive hit, to say the least. The reboot has sold over 11 million copies worldwide, till date. This makes it the most successful game in the franchise.
Now, publisher Square Enix has revealed that they had different plans for the game. Apparently, it was supposed to be a survival horror game. Square Enix even posted an unreleased gameplay footage of what the reboot was going to be like.

Gamespot Trailers took to their YouTube channel to post an early gameplay footage as well. Going by that, we can make a decent understanding about what we would have gotten had they gone ahead with this particular plan. The game was supposed to be called Tomb Raider: Ascension.
Tomb Raider: Ascension
Tomb Raider: Ascension would have been very different from what we got in 2013. The entire setting and gameplay mechanics would have changed. Plus, going by the early footage, we can also see Lara Croft breaking the fourth wall. She can be heard communicating about how people or fans do not know who she really is. This is a very interesting and artistic take on Lara Croft and the game as a whole.

However, it is difficult to say how this particular project would have been perceived. Tomb Raider’s official Twitter page tweeted that, “The name “Ascension” stuck around for a while after Crystal narrowed in on an origin story. Check out early explorations of branding for the reimagining of Lara’s first adventure.” In the post and video, they basically talk about the overall branding plans of the Tomb Raider 2013 game.

However, it is never too late and Square Enix could take on a different route with the next Tomb Raider game. The overall Tomb Raider: Ascension idea was definitely something a lot of players would have liked as survival horror is one of the most popular genres in the realm of gaming.
