Sony Alpha 7 IV Announced with Hybrid Autofocus, 33-Megapixel Sensor and more

  • Sony has announced the Alpha 7 IV interchangeable-lens camera. It has a new 33-megapixel full-frame back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, a wide ISO sensitivity range of 50-204,800, a 15-stop dynamic range, the latest BIONZ XR image processing engine, and two new flashes, the HVL-F60RM2 and HVL-F46RM. The Sony camera claims to be capable of 2.5x slow motion with 4K 60p video. For smoother gradations, it includes a 10-bit 4:2:2 All-I XAVC S-I.

    Sony Alpha 7 IV Price

    The new Sony Alpha 7 IV costs $2,500 (approximately Rs. 1,86,900) and CAD 3,200  (roughly Rs. 1,93,700). It will be launching in December of this year. A kit version with Sony’s FE 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS zoom lens will be available for around $2,700 (around Rs. 2,02,000) and CAD 3,400.00(roughly Rs. 2,05,800), according to Sony.

    The new HVL-F46RM flash will be available in November for $400 (approximately Rs. 29,900) and CAD 550(roughly Rs. 33,300). There’s also the new HVL-F60RM2 flash, which will be available for $550 (approximately Rs. 41,400) and CAD 750 (roughly Rs. 45,400) at the same time. All of this will be available through a number of Sony authorised dealers across North America. The Sony Alpha 7 IV and flashes are not yet available in India.

    Features and Specifications

    The Sony Alpha 7 IV features hybrid autofocus with increased speed, AI-based real-time Eye autofocus, and real-time photo and video tracking. With 759 phase-detection AF points in a high-density focal plane AF system that covers about 94% of the image area, it can shoot continuously at up to 10 frames per second with AF tracking. In addition to humans, Sony claims that the camera can now track the eyes of birds and animals in both still images and videos. The Alpha 7 IV is also touted to have a 30% increase in the face and eye detection accuracy for people over the Alpha 7 III.

    The camera also boasts optical 5-axis in-body image stabilisation for 5.5-step correction and Active Mode hand-held movie shooting. The Sony Alpha 7 IV features a 33-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS picture sensor and a BIONZ XR image processor for up to 8x processing speed, as previously mentioned. It is also touted to have a 15-stop dynamic range and a large ISO sensitivity range of 50 to 204,800.

    The Sony Alpha 7 IV has a vari-angle LCD touch monitor for easy positioning. It comes with an OLED quad-VGA viewfinder with 1.6 times the resolution of the Alpha 7 III. There are over ten presets to pick from, as well as eight parameters. S-Cinetone, S-Log3, and Creative Look, Creative Look IN, and Creative Look BW are among the presets available. The camera contains a dial that allows you to quickly choose between still, movie, and S&Q modes. The camera’s back dial can also be customised, and there are new mode-specific options in the interface.
