Samsung revealed the industry’s first 0.64-micrometer pixel mobile sensor on Thursday. It is the smallest mobile image sensor with 50MP options for both front and rear-facing cameras in mobile phones. Samsung ISOCELL JN1 is an innovative mobile sensor that combines pixel technology advancements to decrease chip size while improving light sensitivity as well as phase-detection capabilities.

The new JN1 can capture more vivid pictures on the industry’s smallest 50Mp mobile image sensor. Thanks to advanced pixel technologies like improved ISOCELL 2.0, Smart-ISO, and Double Super PDAF.
The JN1 is a new high-resolution image sensor from Samsung that uses ISOCELL 2.0 technology with further improvements that boost light sensitivity by nearly 16 percent. The sensor uses Samsung’s Tetrapixel four-to-one pixel binning technology for low-light conditions. This technology combines four adjoining 0.64m pixels into one large 1.28m pixel to quadruple light sensitivity for brighter 12.5Mp images.
ISOCELL JN1 uses Smart-ISO, a technology that modifies the conversion gain depending on the intensity of lighting in the environment for increased dynamic range.

In bright conditions, Smart-ISO uses Low ISO to maintain clarity in the highlights, and High ISO in low-light situations to minimize readout noise and produce superb low-light performance. In mixed-light circumstances, the mobile sensor additionally enables inter-scene HDR for ideal exposure levels obtained from two different readouts. Low and High ISOs, which are then blended to form a final image.
The image sensor offers up to 4K resolution video recording at 60 frames per second (fps); or full HD at 240fps for seamless, crystal-clear footage, according to the company.

The ISOCELL JN1 is Samsung’s most versatile image sensor so far. It has all the advanced features all packed into a compact 1/2.76-inch optical format. The JN1 is compatible with existing 1/2.8-inch devices thanks to strong collaboration with ecosystem partners. This enables the sensor to be used for front-facing, ultra-wide, or telephoto cameras in addition to normal wide camera options.
