After the Pixel 6 launch, rumours of Google working on a folding smartphone have surfaced a lot. In the past few years, rumours of a Google Pixel Foldable has surfaced quite a lot. Although without any solid proof of its existence. Now, Ross Young, chief executive of the industry body Display Supply Chain Consultants (DSCC), has shared insights on the same. Let us look at the latest information on this upcoming fold smartphone:
Google Pixel Foldable Launch May Happen in Q4 2022
According to Young, the foldable Google Pixel phone will see its display panel production begin in the third quarter of 2022. This can lead up to a potential launch by the end of the year. Moreover, other industry reports have similar information, suggesting that Google is preparing to put in more features for adapting Android to foldable devices.
The company had said back in I/O 2018 that it would be working to include support for foldable smartphones in Android. In addition, recent reports have suggested the presence of such code in the Android 13 developer beta. Previous reports also suggest that the Google Pixel Foldable will feature a variable refresh rate, maxing out at 120Hz. It will be thanks to an LTPO OLED display panel.

Young has also stated that other foldable smartphones are to be launched this year. It may include a second such device from Oppo, two foldable phones from Vivo, and a new one from Xiaomi. Oppo recently unveiled its Find N, which looks to make foldable phone hinges stronger and the crease along its fold less evident. However, while critics hailed it for a premium feel, the stocky, the short build did not exactly make it a big upgrade in terms of real-world usage.
Meanwhile, recent reports suggest that the foldable Pixel phone may cost around $1,400 (approx. Rs 1.05 lakh). Although it isn’t cheap but it is cheaper than the Samsung foldable.
What we know so far on Pixel Fold
Earlier, last year, a purported internal Android document suggested the Q4 2021 launch timeline for Google Pixel Foldable. The phone appeared with the codename ‘Passport’ alongside ‘Raven’ and ‘Oriole’. They are apparently the codenames for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Whereas Google also confirmed the testing of various foldable prototypes. A patent filing suggested that the company could be finalising a model that would fold inwards.
