Starting with the Google Pixel 8 series released last year, Google began providing 7 years of Android and security updates, a significant upgrade from the previous 3 years of OS updates and 5 years of security support offered for earlier models. Last month, the Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 7 series received the Android 16 developer preview in preparation for the stable release slated for mid-2025.
In a recent announcement, the company confirms that the Pixel 6 series, Pixel 7 series, and Google Pixel Fold will receive five years of OS and security updates. Additionally, these devices may also receive new and enhanced features through Pixel Drops. So, read ahead to know more about this.
Older Google Pixel Phones To Now Get 5 Years Of OS Updates
Google states that the five-year period for Google Pixel updates will begin from the date the device was first made available for purchase on the Google Store in the United States.

The Google Pixel devices which will receive 5 years of OS updates are:
- Google Pixel Fold
- Google Pixel 7a
- Google Pixel 7 Pro
- Google Pixel 7
- Google Pixel 6 Pro
- Google Pixel 6
- Google Pixel 6a
Now, the Google Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 Pro were released in October 2021, meaning they will receive updates for 5 years, until October 2026. Therefore, they should be supported up to Android 17.
The Pixel 6a, which launched in the US in July 2022, will reach its 5-year update window in July 2027. If we expect Android 18 to be released in June 2027, the Pixel 6a may still receive the Google updates. Similarly, the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, which debuted in October 2022, may receive the Android 18 update.
Google also announced that Android 16 will release in the second quarter of 2025, before June. Additionally, we can expect a Google Pixel smaller update to follow later in the year, meaning there will be two updates throughout 2025.
