Apple is reportedly developing the most powerful Chipsets for its upcoming AR/VR headset, which will feature three displays, according to a new rumour. Apple might use the AMOLED display for low-resolution peripheral vision, allowing a foveated display system to be implemented. In order to provide unique hand tracking, the headset may have many highly sensitive 3D sensing modules.

According to display analyst Ross Young, the display layout will contain two micro OLED displays and one AMOLED screen; with Sony slated to supply the micro OLED displays. According to Apple analyst Ming-chi Kuo, the structured light sensors can recognise things in the hands, similar to how Face ID can figure out face expressions to make Animoji.

Kuo writes that “Capturing the details of hand movement can provide a more intuitive and vivid human-machine UI”. He also expects the sensors in Apple’s AR/VR Headset to be able to detect things from up to 200 times far away than the iPhone’s Face ID.

Gaming, content consumption, and communication will all be priorities for the headset. It will feature two processors; one with the same computing power as the M1 and the other to handle input from various sensors. The headset could have at least six to eight optical modules to give continuous video see-through AR services at the same time.

The Apple AR/VR Headset headset would be similar to the Oculus Quest; and also some prototypes are being tested with external cameras to offer AR functionality. It might cost between $2,000 and $3,000 and include at least 15 camera units, eye-tracking, and possibly iris recognition.
