Apple could Release a 9-inch Foldable Device: Reports

  • According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple can release a foldable device with a 9-inch screen in 2025. In a tweet yesterday, Kuo updated an earlier prediction that Apple would release such a device in 2024. According to Kuo, the machine Apple plans to release in 2025 will be a hybrid of the iPhone and the iPad. Apple is testing a 9-inch foldable OLED display (PPI between iPhone & iPad, adoption of TDDI). “The test is to validate key technologies and may not be the final product specification.

    Samsung is far ahead of the competition to perfect a foldable smartphone. The company has released several Samsung Galaxy Fold and Galaxy Flip models, each with improvements to the foldable display technology and a better hinge. On the other side, Apple appears to be taking its time in releasing a foldable device.

    In 2021, Kuo predicted that the Cupertino-based tech giant would release a foldable device in 2023. It would be a big winner in the foldable category, with global shipments exceeding 15-20 million units. The first iPhone could have an 8-inch QHD+ (3,2001,800) screen.

    If and when it is releases, the Apple foldable device will compete with the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 series, which is already in its third generation; the OPPO Find N 5G and the Vivo X Fold 5G, which will be available in China on April 11, 2022.

    Apple is testing two types of devices, according to Tom’s Guide: a fold-out hybrid similar to Samsung’s Z Fold series and a ‘clamshell’ flip-phone design similar to Samsung Galaxy Z Flip range.

    Company may collaborate with either LG or Samsung to manufacture the foldable displays for the company. Corning, the maker of Gorilla Glass, is also working on a foldable glass solution.
