  • When Yusheng Du broke all records by solving the Rubik’s Cube in just 3.47 seconds last year, the internet became more fascinated with how “speed cubing” worked. If you have been in a similar dilemma, this how to solve Rubik’s Cube guide is probably going to come in very handy. It is not just one of the best selling toys of all time, there is a proper algorithm behind how this small cube of wonder works. Understanding this algorithm and memorizing certain sequences is all you need. Of course, practice too. Lots of practice.

There are a variety of different variations for the Rubik’s Cube. However, we are going to solve the standard and most popular 3×3 Rubik’s Cube today. Grab your Rubik’s Cube and read through the guide. By the end of it, you are going to have a solved Rubik’s Cube in your hands.

Rubik’s Cube: History Of The World-Changing Cube

    The world-changing Rubik' Cube

The Rubik’s Cube has been around for longer than you may think. Erno Rubik, its creator, was a Hungarian teacher and hardcore puzzle enthusiast. He assembled his magical creation in 1974. Initially, he called it the Magic Cube. One day, a toy agent pitched this “Cube” to the then-popular Ideal Toy & Novelty Company.

This company changed the Cube’s name to Rubik’s Cube and started selling it in toy stores by 1980. It did not take long for puzzlers from across the globe to start obsessing over solving the Rubik’s Cube.

Now, after almost 50 years, the Rubik’s Cube is still one of the bestselling toys in the world. The sale of this puzzle is still going strong, with its sales figures hitting a staggeringly high $250 million in 2017 itself. The hype of the Rubik’s Cube was so immense that the World Cube Association was formed way back in 2004.

The association is still very active and holds serious speed cubing competitions for all Rubik’s Cube players to take part in. Way more significant than one may think, right? That is the beauty of the Rubik’s Cube.

Solve Rubik’s Cube – Basic Rotations To Make Use Of

Before getting into how you can solve the Rubik’s Cube, it is important to know of the basic ways you can rotate the cube to your advantage. There are 8 ways to do so. Before getting into that, here’s what the numbers you see on this guide will denote:

    • R: Right Layer
    • L: Left Layer
    • U: Upper Layer
    • F: Front Layer

With that out of the way, here’s how the basic rotations will be denoted:

    • R: You will need to rotate the right layer in a clockwise direction of 90 degrees
    • R’: You will need to rotate the right layer in an anti-clockwise direction of 90 degrees
    • L: You will need to rotate the left layer in a clockwise direction of 90 degrees
    • L’: You will need to rotate the left layer in an anti-clockwise direction of 90 degrees
    • U: You will need to rotate the upper layer in a clockwise direction of 90 degrees
    • U’: You will need to rotate the upper layer in an anti-clockwise direction of 90 degrees
    • F: You will need to rotate the front layer in a clockwise direction of 90 degrees
    • F’: You will need to rotate the right layer in an anti-clockwise direction of 90 degrees

How To Solve Rubik’s Cube (3×3)?

With the basic algorithm out of the way, here’s how to solve the Rubik’s Cube with our beginner-friendly guide:

Step 1: Firstly, you will need to choose a centerpiece of any colour (for example white). Once you choose your desired colour to start with, make a white cross by bringing the four edge pieces around the white centerpiece.

Step 2: Match the colours of all the four lateral centerpieces with the bottom layer edges individually. You do so by pulling the matched pairs in opposite directions. You then bring them back, making a cross of white.

Step 3: Set the bottom layer corners in such a way that they match the respective colours. Apply the R U R’ U’ algorithm and keep repeating it till this bottom corner piece comes in the right position.

Step 4: Now its time to match the second layer of the Rubik’s Cube. You do so by matching the four edges to their lateral respective faces. Then, match the top layer edge with its center layer while noticing the top-facing colour. Use one of these two algorithms:

    1. First Case: If the colour of the other part matches with the centerpiece on the right side, use the U R U R’ U’ F’ U’ F algorithm.
    2. Second Case: If it matches with the centerpiece on the left side, use the U’ L’ U’ L U F U F’ algorithm instead.

Step 5: It is now time to make the yellow cross on the top layer. You do this by applying the F R U R’ U’ F’ a couple of times.

Step 6: Now, you will need to match any of the four edge pieces of the top layer with the centerpiece of the middle. Use and repeat the F R U R’ U’ F’ till all the edges have matched.

Step 7: Keep the pieces that are left unmatched at the top. Then, apply the algorithm U R U’ L’ U R’ U’ L till the pieces have matched.

Step 8: Now, you will need to select the yellow colour as the Cube’s front face. Start from the corner and use the U R’ U’ R algorithm multiple times till the corner pieces are arranged properly.

Step 9: Once that is done, bring a disarranged corner on the top right side by rotating the top layer. Then, you will need to use the U R’ U’ R again a couple of times to rearrange the corner pieces. With that out of the way, all you have to do is arrange the yellow layer a couple of times to finally solve the Rubik’s Cube.
