Google Chat is now directly available from Gmail to more users. The feature first launched last year for Google Workspace users. But, now, it is available for most Gmail users on iOS, Android, and the web. However, it’s still a test feature, and you have to enable it. It allows you to hold chat sessions with friends and groups of friends either on an informal or formal basis.
Google Chat integrates two of the popular features of its G suite app for business to its standard Gmail users. They are namely – Chat and Rooms. The former is meant for communication with friends, family, and or colleagues. Whereas, the latter (Rooms) allows one to chat with multiple people at the same time. Both of these features are now available on Gmail’s mobile application.

How to activate Google Chat on Smartphones?
The first thing you need to do is activate “Chat” for your Gmail account. Currently, at least, you need to do it separately on your browser and on your mobile device. Here’s how to do it:

- Tap on the three-line icon on the top left corner of your mobile screen. Then, select Settings.
- If you have multiple accounts signed in, Select your account.
- Now, when you using an Android smartphone, check off “Show the Chat and Rooms tabs.”
Whereas, if you are using an iPhone or iPad, toggle “Show the chat and rooms tab” on.
Note: A dialogue box appears giving out some information, tap OK.
You can now try the Chat feature. A bar appears at the bottom of the screen with a tab Chat, Meet, Rooms, and Spaces. You can use Google Chat to message anyone, as long as you know their email address or phone number.

Meanwhile, to enable Google’s Chat feature in Gmail on the web, Go to the Settings page, and then select Google Chat in the Chat menu. You’ll then see a sidebar for your chats and rooms on the right side of your Gmail inbox. Also, after restarting the Gmail app, the toggle to enable it for mobile should appear in Settings.
