Government Bans 43 Mobile Apps Citing National Security

Several apps owned by Chinese companies are among the freshly banned apps, including four owned by China’s retail giant, the Alibaba Group.

Indian Government on Tuesday bans another 43 more mobile apps, mostly Chinese-owned. This fresh ban includes apps like AliExpress, CamCard, and Taobao Live, among others. Furthermore, it comes nearly three months after the government banned the popular battle royale game PUBG Mobile.

Additionally, it banned 117 other apps and games that had a link with China. Initially, they banned 59 Chinese apps that included some of the renowned ones. In addition, it included TikTok, Shareit, UC Browser, and WeChat.

“This action was taken based on the inputs regarding these apps for engaging in activities which are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of state and public order.”

Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in a statement

The government had first banned 59 Chinese apps in June as tension with China peaked. Moreover, it was following the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers in a clash with Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh’s Galwan Valley.

In September, the government banned 118 more apps saying they posed a threat to the country’s sovereignty. Moreover, a total of 220 apps is now blocked. It includes the viral video platform TikTok and the popular mobile shooting game, PUBG.

The ministry added by saying that it issued the order for blocking access of these apps by users in the country based on “comprehensive reports received from Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center, Ministry of Home Affairs.” However, the government hasn’t provided any particular details about the issues resulting in the ban of the 43 apps.

This is the fourth banning of apps that the government banned amid the ongoing standoff between Indian and Chinese troops in Eastern Ladakh. The government is committed to protecting the interests of citizens and the sovereignty and integrity of India on all fronts and it shall take all possible steps to ensure that.
