Xiaomi retains as a market leader as smartphone shipments in India grow 11% in Q1 2021, according to Canalys. In addition, it also mentions a total of 37.1 million smartphones were in the country. They say it attributes to “favorable macroeconomic factors” that allowed the smartphone vendors to capitalize on the growing importance. It is in the times of remote education, work from home, and leisure for Millennials during the COVID-19 crisis.

However, Canalys warns that the demand for smartphones in India will plunge in Q2 2021. As the second wave of COVID-19 hits the country hard – it will become more expensive as the year rolls on. Xiaomi topped the table again with its 10.5 million shipments accounting for 28% of the market share in India.
Xiaomi Shipped The Highest Smartphones in Q1 2021
According to a report from Canalys, it emerges as the leader in the Indian smartphone market with a 28% market share. However, its market share dropped by 3% compared to the last quarter. Samsung took second place with a market share of 19% and total smartphone shipments of around 7 million. Whereas, in third place is Vivo with an 18% market share and 6.7 million smartphones shipped. Oppo and Realme rank 4th and 5th with 13 and 12 percent shares respectively.

On a YoY basis, Xiaomi market share reduced from 31 percent to 28 percent, Samsung’s share remained 19 percent. Whereas, Vivo registered a drop from 20 percent to 10 percent. It is to be noted that the smartphone shipments in the India market declined on a quarter-over-quarter basis in Q1 2021.
On the other hand, he says that Apple too had a stellar performance in Q1 2021. According to him, the demand for Apple’s smartphones is by the local assembly of iPhone 12, attractive finance offers, and sustained demand for iPhone 11.

Regional lockdowns could hamper the transport of raw materials and devices. This may be a hurdle for smartphone brands to build up optimum inventory in the second half of the year. Another Canalys Analyst, Varun Kannan, said that a combination of the “ongoing supply crunch on key imported components and a weaker Rupee will make it increasingly difficult for vendors to maintain margins at current price levels”.
