More YouTube channels in India have been banned for spreading false information, according to the Indian government. There are ten Indian and six Pakistani YouTube channels on the list. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting banned 22 channels before this month out of which 18 were based in India and four in Pakistan. The reason for the block, according to PIB, is that “these channels were spreading fake news on social media on matters related to national security.

According to reports these channels were causing harm to India’s foreign relations, communal harmony, and public order also. None of the digital news publishers had provided the Ministry with the information required by Rule 18 of the IT Rules, 2021.”
According to the Indian government, “content published by some of India’s YouTube channels were referring to a community as terrorists and were intricating hate among members of various religious communities.” Such content was to have the potential to cause communal disharmony and disrupt public order.”

PIB also stated that it discovered multiple India-based channels publishing “unverified news and videos with the potential to cause panic among various sections of society.”
Channels based in Pakistan were posting false news about the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir, India’s foreign relations in light of the situation in Ukraine and among other things. “The content of these channels were completely false, and sensitive from the perspective of India’s national security, sovereignty, and integrity, as well as India’s friendly relations with foreign States,” PIB stated.
