It has been quite some time since Sony started working on new camera sensors for smartphones. One of their most anticipated projects was the development of the IMX9 series of sensors. Several reports and news say that it might launch later this year. A leak by known tipster Digital Chat Station reveals the model name and specifications of one of the sensors – the Sony IMX989 Sensor.

This 50-megapixel sensor might have a size of about 1-inch. This would be a flagship offering by Sony and might debut with Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship model – the Xiaomi 12 Ultra. The official release and launch date for this sensor has yet to be revealed.
The upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra will launch in May this year and might feature the IMX989 sensor. On the other hand, the upcoming Vivo X80 phone will probably feature the 50-megapixel Sony IMX866 RGBW sensor.

Xiaomi 12 Ultra May Feature Sony IMX989 Sensor
There has been very little news regarding the features the upcoming Xiaomi 12 Ultra will have. Speculations say that the phone might launch in China in May and could be a premium offering by Xiaomi. The phone will probably be powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ SoC an upgraded version of the vanilla Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 SoC.

Leaked pictures and renders can only give us an insight into what we can expect from the phone when it launches. It might feature a 6.6-inch 2K AMOLED curved display and a 4,860mAh battery that supports 120W fast charging. We expect the phone to come with a Leica-branded rear camera setup including a 50-megapixel main sensor, probably the Sony IMX989 Sensor.
