“We’re building the most compelling alternative to Apple.”
– Carl Pei’s in the event.
He acknowledges the fact that Apple devices work so seamlessly with each other due to its ecosystem. But he also says that the consumers don’t have an alternative to the Apple ecosystem. Nothing’s ecosystem will be the open answer to that, according to Pei. He says it’s the start of an ecosystem of products. To underline this, integration and connectivity options with Apple AirPods and Tesla cars are teased during the presentation.
Although Pei did not delve into the hardware details of Nothing Phone 1. He did go into quite a detail for the software it will run on. The phone will run on Nothing OS, an Android skin that “will effortlessly connect and integrate Nothing products and products from other world-leading brands.”

Furthermore, the images shared of Nothing Phone 1 during the event reveal an At a Glance-like widget at the top of the home and lock screen. Carl Pei further says that the OS is focused on minimizing distractions, so it’s using fewer animations and will introduce more focus-centred features.
Like OnePlus’ initial approach to OxygenOS, Nothing OS is to only consist of the best features from “pure” Android. It will also consist of “the hardware seamlessly integrates with software through bespoke fonts, colours, graphical elements and sounds.” Simply put, it will be close to stock Android, all while staying true to the company’s distinct style.
