  • Netflix intends to enter the video gaming industry. Mike Verdu, a former Electronic Arts, and Facebook executive have been hired as the streaming platform’s Vice President of Game Development. Netflix now only offers movies and television shows on its platform, but it has hinted about moving into the video game market for some time. Separately, Netflix announced the debut of two new services intended towards making the platform more kid-friendly: Kids Recap Email and Kids Top 10 Row.

    Netflix is seeking to widen its boundaries by entering the video gaming industry by next year, according to a Bloomberg report quoting a source familiar with the situation. The games might debut as a new programming genre, similar to its documentary and stand-up specials, and could be offered for free at first.

    Netflix has been hinting at a move into the video game market for some time. The free-to-play Stranger Things mobile game, which was launched at E3 2019, was the company’s first step in this direction. Netflix stated in May that it was looking for an executive to assist raise its video gaming investment. The company has tested interactive movies and TV shows like Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Carmen Sandiego earlier on the platform.

    New Kids Features

    The streaming service has also unveiled two additional services aimed at making it more kid-friendly. The first is a service called Kids Recap Email, which will send parents information on their children’s content choices, Netflix recommendations based on their favorite shows, and printable coloring sheets and activities inspired by their favorite movies, shows, and characters.

    Netflix will also provide parents with top themes and topic charts highlighting their children’s favorite shows. Parents will get advice on how to improve their children’s Netflix viewing experience. They will also get to know how to set up parental controls on their profiles. This feature will be available to users who have an active kids profile on their account starting July 16th.

    The Kids Top 10 row would be another Netflix feature. It will display the top 10 most popular children’s titles, together with their maturity ratings, which will be updated daily. All devices will display a ‘Top 10’ badge for titles that make the cut for the Kids Top 10 row. You can view the list on the ‘Kids’ profile homepage or in the menu bar’s ‘New & Popular’ section. Users in 93 countries can already access the Kids Top 10 row.
