India is moving toward a cashless society. A year of demonetization and two years of pandemic encouraged many to become cashless, resulting from both events. Until today, UPI payments can only be through a smartphone, and those with feature phones use cash. However, everything is about to change from here on out. The Reserve Bank of India implemented a UPI payment function earlier this month, allowing individuals in rural India to use feature phones to conduct UPI transactions.
UPI 123PAY is a safe and secure way for feature phone users to pay for goods and services via the Unified Payments Interface (UPI)”. With UPI 123PAY, people with feature phones can carry out various transactions using four different technological options.
The National Payments Corporation of India states that these include dialling an IVR (interactive voice response) number, app capabilities in feature phones, missed call-based approach, and even proximity sound-based payments.

Using this function does not need an Internet connection. A 24-hour hotline for digital payments, named DigiSaathi, is also available from the Central bank.
