Google has finally given its take on how the Pixel 6 series charging works. To recall, the Google Pixel 6 series started its advertising with 30W charging speeds at the time of launch. However, it turned out not to be the case in real-time. From testing via various tech expert, it revealed that the phone doesn’t actually charge at anywhere close to 30W. In fact, tester Rob Triggs from Android Authority, found that the phones drew a maximum of 22W and an average of 13W for a charging cycle.
Google Pixel 6 Series Has Up To 23W Peak Wired Charging Speeds
Now, Google has posted a thread on its Pixel community forum, explaining how charging works on the Google Pixel 6 series. For starters, the company claimed that the phones’ batteries are meant to balance battery life, fast charging, and longevity. This thread explains “how charging works on Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro”.

“We’ve optimize Pixel’s lithium-ion battery for high charge rates when the battery level is low. Pixel 6 can get up to 50 per cent in around 30 minutes (with Google’s 30W USB-C Power Charger). It quickly reaches up to 80 per cent in about an hour, depending on device usage and temperature.”

Further, the post adds that the peak power which Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro draw from the wired charger is 21W and 23W, respectively. “As the battery gets closer to full, charging power is gradually reduces in order to improve battery longevity,” it adds. Meaning, Google Pixel 6 series will charge quickly when you’re running low on power. But otherwise “minimize degradation to preserve the lifespan of your battery”.

On the other hand, Google warns that the Pixel phones may also pause charging above 80 percent under certain conditions. The tech giant also recommends enabling Adaptive Charging to optimise charge rate for gradual overnight charging. For the first time, Google confirms that peak wired power draw is 21W for the Pixel 6 and 23W for the Pixel 6 Pro. Meanwhile, Google recommends its first-party accessory for Google Pixel 6 series. Because it supports the new USB PD 3.0 PPS standard for more efficient charging. Existing USB PD and BC1.2 wall chargers also work.
