Surely, 2021 saw several 5G smartphones getting launched in India. However, it is much like having a bullet train high speed rail line without the bullet train. The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has now officially released a press statement. According to their statement, 13 Indian cities will first get 5G. 5G in India List of First 13 Cities
According to the Department of Telecommunications press release, “Costing Rs 224 crore, the project is likely to be completed by December 31, 2021, paving the way for end-to-end testing of 5G (/topic/5g) User Equipments (UEs) and network equipment by 5G (/topic/5g) stakeholders developing 5G (/topic/5g) products/services/use cases, including indigenous start-ups, SMEs, Academia and Industry in the country.”

Further, the press statement by DoT reveals the first 13 Indian cities that will be getting 5G. With the 5G in India launch date now revealed to be in 2022, here is a quick look at the first 13 cities getting it:

- Ahmedabad
- Kolkata
- Hyderabad
- Chandigarh
- Pune
- Delhi
- Mumbai
- Jamnagar
- Chennai
- Gandhinagar

Although the list of the first Indian cities getting 5G is out now, nothing has been revealed about the first telecom operator offering 5G. We can expect to see some major competition between all the leading telecom operators in India to be the first to roll out the high speed internet service. Whether it is 5G in India by Jio, Airtel or Vodafone Idea, the core fast is that it is finally happening.
