  • Facebook launches its newsletter product “Bulletin” on Tuesday, a digital platform for free and paid articles and podcasts that would also aim with competing Substack. CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the platform, which is now available at Bulletin.com, and introduced a few of the writers the company has hired.

As high-profile journalists and authors have left media firms to go out on their own in the last year, Facebook is attempting to compete in the fast-growing email newsletter trend. Substack, a self-publishing platform that helps writers sell email subscriptions, has enticed journalists using cash advances.

Twitter, which just purchased newsletter platform Revue, is one of the other tech companies in the field.

The platform is launching alongside a number of high-profile personalities & writers, including sportscaster Erin Andrews, author Malcolm Gladwell, and “Queer Eye” star Tan France.

The social media platform has had a tumultuous history with the news sector; which reached a head in February following a dispute with the Australian government regarding overpaying news outlets for content. Following the conflict, Facebook announced a $1 billion investment in the global news sector over the next three years.

The articles and podcasts will also be available through Facebook’s News Feed and News section, according to the company.

Facebook stated that it was primarily launching with American creators and that it was not currently accepting new ones. However, it stated that the Bulletin site was accessible from everywhere in the world. Also, that after the beta test, it would attempt to add more international names.

Facebook said in April that it will spend $5 million to hire local journalists to write content for its new platform.
