Facebook has had a really long and rough week this month. On October 4, 2021, Facebook users from across the globe faced the longest ever outage of the social media platform. The social media platform was down for six hours and it took the internet by storm. However, it was not just Facebook that suffered.
As Facebook owns WhatsApp and Instagram as well, these were down as alongside the social media platform. In India, where there are the most number of both Facebook and WhatsApp users, things were not looking good. If that was bad enough already, the social media giant met with another outage on October 8, 2021. In just a week, Facebook faced probably one of the toughest outage challenges in its history of existence.

Facebook, Instagram Second Outage: What they had to say?
Facebook stated that, “We’re aware that some people are having trouble accessing our apps and products. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and we apologize for any inconvenience.” In addition, they also said that, ” We’re so sorry if you weren’t able to access our products during the last couple of hours. We know how much you depend on us to communicate with one another. We fixed the issue — thanks again for your patience this week.”

Further, Instagram also took to their official Twitter handle to post something as an apology of sorts. However, users needed a proper explanation for these outages and were not really happy. Moreover, what mainly concerned users was the reliability and security of these apps because of the two consecutive outages. Besides, those small business owners who rely on Facebook and Instagram tools to reach out to customers would also force them to shift to a different platform altogether.
What Else?
The second outage luckily did not last for long at all. In fact, it was so short that most people did not even notice that Facebook was down during that time. However, Santosh Janardhan, Vice President of Facebook, stated that this was caused due to configuration changes on their data center routers. These routers are responsible for coordinating network traffic between these data centers.

Facebook faced a tremendous loss of over a $100 million in just a week. Meanwhile, CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with a loss in billions to his net worth. We certainly hope that there are no outages in the upcoming future. Outages are definitely something that can occur but, the frequency and duration of these outages is what really has been the problem this week.
