5G Scams Prevail, Users To Become Aware

  • The 5G services were launched in India on October 1, 2022. The new network made its way to the IMC 2022 event. PM Modi launched 5G networks in India. But alongside this, the 5G scams have increased too.

    5G is slowly rolling out in India in phases. This next-generation mobile network along with use cases has also opened up doors for scammers. The scammers have got new ways to dupe people online.

    However, as the new services are rolling phase wise, there is more chance of scams in this initial stage. People are excited and also trying to figure out how to activate 5G on their smartphones.

    Warning Tweet By Mumbai Police

    Amidst these, Mumbai Police have taken over to Twitter to warn users of the5G scam. The fraudsters try to fool people by guiding them to convert to 5G.

    The tweet by Mumbai Police warns users about the new wave of scammers. These scammers are fooling people by offering them guides to convert to 5G. This tweet warns people not to fall into such 5G scams. Also, it said never to share personal or banking information or click on unknown links.

    Mumbai Police has even shown a graphic suggesting that these scammers pretend to be executives from established phone service companies. They even offer help to users in upgrading from 4G to 5G.

    Scammers also pressure people to share personal and banking details by creating unknown links. However, this is not the first time. There have been several such cases in different states. The cybersecurity units of various states have already alarmed people about such scams.

    Similar Cases of 5G Scams

    Previously, Hyderabad Cyberabad (cybercrime unit) department issued a warning on Twitter. The tweet was in Telugu. It said, “Cyber fraudsters are sending links in the name of 5G. If you open the link, you risk hacking the phone. If you are not alert, you will be in danger. Accounts are being emptied by sending links to upgrade from 4G to 5G SIM. The links are being sent with the names of respective telecom companies”.

    Even the Gurugram police department also warned against 5G scams. The report by the department asked the residents not to share their OTPs with any Tele caller.

    During this process, they can clear the bank accounts. This report has the Deputy Commissioner of police comment, “Since the news of 5G rollout in Gurugram has come out, the number of these incidents has increased. However, we have asked residents to be vigilant and not to share OTPs with anyone.”

    According to the report, the way for scamming is similar. Scammers will pretend to be executives from leading telcos. They will try to guide people to switch to a 5G SIM. Meanwhile, they will even send OTPs or links to users. That will help the scammers get access to their devices or bank accounts.

    5G In India

    Reliance Jio and Airtel are the only two companies currently that have announced plans for their 5G rollout. They have said that the roll-out of 5G services will begin phase-wise in the country.

    However, the users will be able to touse the services after the OTA update by the manufacturers. Airtel has released the list of all the devices that began the 5G in different regions. 

    Moreover, the government of India also putting pressure on manufacturers to speed up the process of rolling out OTA updates. This will help with the 5G support for smartphones.

    Even Apple iPhones will receive a 5G update in India by December. Samsung is planning to roll out the 5G update for its phone by mid-November.
