As an employee, you can now create your own UAN number online and have your 12-digit number ready to check the total balance in your PF account. This process has two steps:
- Generate UAN number
- Activate UAN number
Here is the list of documents and things that you need to keep ready to generate your UAN online.
Documents Required To Generate UAN Number Online
- Identity proof: Voter ID, passport, driving license
- Address proof: rental agreement, ration card, any utility bill in your name
- Bank account details: IFSC code, branch details, bank account number
- Permanent Account Number (PAN) card
- Aadhar card
- Employees State Insurance Corporation card

Steps To Create Your UAN:
Step 1: Visit the EPFO Unified Portal
Open your browser and go to Universal Account Number (UAN) MEMBER e-SEWAthe EPFO unified portal: EPFO Member Portal.
Step 2: Search For Direct UAN Allotment
Once the login screen appears on the member portal, click on ‘Direct UAN Allotment by Employees. . You can find this in the Important links section just below the login box.
Step 3: Enter Aadhar Registered Mobile Number
- Now, a new page will open, asking you to enter a mobile number registered with your Aadhar. Enter the captcha.
- Click on “Generate OTP.” You will receive the OTP on your registered mobile number.
- Once you enter the OTP, accept the disclaimer by clicking the “Submit” button to proceed further.
Step 4: Confirm Employment Status
- On the next page, confirm whether you are currently employed in any organization by selecting ‘Yes’ or ‘No.’
- Click on ‘Yes’ and then click ‘Submit.’ (You cannot generate UAN if you choose ‘No’)
Step 5: Select Employment Category
If you have chosen ‘If your establishment is covered under EPFO’
- Select you don’t know the PF code of your employee
- Choose the identity proof type and upload the document.
- Next page, enter your Aadhar number in the given space.
- Generate OTP and enter the OTP sent on your registered mobile number. Following that, you will receive the UAN number created newly on your mobile number.
If you have chosen ‘If your establishment is not covered under EPFO’
- On next page, you will have to fill in all details about your establishment like name, address, joining date, number of employees in the establishment and so on.
- ‘Save’ the details.
- In the same process, next enter your Aadhar number in the given space.
- Generate and enter the OTP sent on your Aadhar registered mobile number. You will receive an SMS with your new UAN number created.
Why Is UAN Number Important?
UAN helps employees view all the member IDs linked to it. If a member has already been allotted a UAN, he/she must provide the same when joining the new employer to mark the new allotted member ID number as the already allotted UAN. The employees must also provide the UAN number of the former organization to the new employer.
