The countdown for the next iteration of FIFA has begun. Preorders for the game started on July 20, 2022, and EA released the FIFA 23 gameplay trailer on July 27, 2022. The trailer offers an exclusive look at the latest features that will make the upcoming game feel closer to reality. There are quite a few bits and pieces to recap and discuss regarding the almost 12-minute-long trailer. In this article, we’re going to take each aspect of the trailer and discuss them in detail. So, sit back and relax while we break down the various elements of the latest FIFA game trailer!

Let’s get started, shall we?

Gameplay trailer

EA tends to announce their latest FIFA game about two to three months before the official launch date. After the game’s announcement, EA also provides information through multiple videos, released periodically. The first video to release for the game was the announcement trailer, which gave us a small glimpse into numerous aspects of the game. A week later, on July 27, 2022, EA released an in-depth look at the improvements they’re making to the upcoming game. You can check out the trailer below:

As you can see, the trailer provides us with quite a bit of new information on the game. Moreover, since PC players weren’t treated to the HyperMotion technology and gameplay improvements to the previous game, there’s a lot to unpack here for the PC version as well.

Features and improvements

The FIFA 23 gameplay trailer is broken down into various segments throughout its 12-minute runtime. The trailer shows multiple features of the new game, which include women’s football, dribbling, goalkeeping, and set pieces, among others. Let’s take a look at them in detail below:

HyperMotion2

FIFA-23-HyperMotion-2.0

Arguably, the most significant improvement to the gameplay is the introduction of HyperMotion2. FIFA 21‘s next-generation versions included the first iteration of this new technology, which uses machine learning algorithms to improve the gameplay. With HyperMotion2, EA claims that this year’s game will be the closest to actual football itself. This time, EA performance captured two different 11 vs 11 matches, resulting in the processing of over six million frames. This massive processing has led to over 6000 new animations in the game, with EA stating that these are “true-to-football” animations. Of course, the weight distribution of the players and balls has been adjusted to ensure a more realistic gameplay feel.

AcceleRATE

One of the most considerable improvements to the gameplay, thanks to the HyperMotion2 technology, is how players accelerate. This acceleration has now been changed to accommodate the players’ body types. There are three types of acceleration in the game, with explosive, controlled, and length acceleration. The explosive acceleration is available to smaller players who can adjust their bodies and movements quickly. They may not have the best sprint speed, but they’ll be able to move faster from stationary positions. Controlled acceleration is more common, with a good balance between acceleration and sprint speed. Finally, length acceleration is available to the heavier, more powerful players. These players will take some time to get into their full sprinting speeds but will be almost unstoppable once they hit their stride.

Overall, this is quite a significant change and will influence the gameplay dynamics to a great extent. In fact, it provides the game with more realism, as older FIFA games did not consider the body type and acceleration to this extent. Players will also have their signature run styles accommodated into the game.

Technical Dribbling

Dribbling is another aspect of the game that will benefit greatly from HyperMotion2. The new animations and machine learning algorithms change how dribbling looks and feels in-game. Elite dribblers will be able to change directions quicker, and the player can cancel dribbles midway, resulting in better body feints.

ML-Jockey

ML here stands for Machine Learning. Jockeying has always been slightly controversial in FIFA, with players complaining about how defenders line up against attackers. In FIFA 23, this has been reworked, with quick lateral movements allowing defenders to line up exactly how they want to against their faster opponents. Elite defenders will also be able to use their physicality to its full potential, with more tackles at acute angles to stop the attacker from dribbling away.

Women’s leagues

FIFA 23 Women's Leagues

FIFA 23 has already made history, with Chelsea FC’s Samantha Kerr being the first female football star on the game’s global cover. Moreover, multiple additions have been made to the women’s leagues and gameplay. Barclay’s Women’s Super League and the French Ligue 1 Feminine divisions will feature in-game, with more added during the game’s duration. The women’s football gameplay also benefits from HyperMotion2, with realistic body types, dribbling, and shooting, among the many changes made.

Attacking

A few significant changes have been made to the attacking side of things as well, with the inclusion of Power Shots and Composed Ball Striking. Power Shot is a form of high-risk, high-reward shooting requiring more precision from the player’s end. However, it also leads to better ball striking, with shooting from dribbles and first-time shots added to the gameplay mechanics. With Composed Ball Striking, precision shots will steal the spotlight. This mechanic allows the players to execute an exquisite first tough, teeing the ball up for superior volleys and long-range shots.

Set Pieces

FIFA 23 set pieces

Set pieces in FIFA 23 will allow the players much more freedom and control over free kicks, corners, and penalties. With penalties, there will be a ring around the ball flashing in red, yellow, and green, signifying the penalty taker’s composure. Hitting the ball at the green ring animation will present more fluid, precise penalty kicks destined for the top bins!

When it comes to free kicks, the new system allows players to use the right stick on their gamepad to pinpoint the exact place where they want to strike the ball. The ball’s trajectory can also be seen, adding more accuracy to free kicks. Furthermore, defenders can lay down behind the player wall, blocking any low shots that come their way!

Summing up

Considering how FIFA 23 seems to be shaping up, the bar for football games will be set extremely high. This year’s upcoming FIFA highlights more simulation and realistic additions to the gameplay, which felt more arcade-like in previous iterations. What do you think of these changes?
