Aarogya Setu, the COVID-19 tracking app launched by the NITI Aayog has already crossed the 7.5 crore downloads mark in a very short span of time. The app was launched less than a month ago on April 2 and has rapidly grown since then. This update was announced by the officials from the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) during a meeting. The free app is available for both Android and iOS, despite the privacy concerns with the app, it has been very successful in terms of its adoption. The growth of the application has been helped by the encouragement to download it by PM Modi and the Central Board of Secondary Education.
According to the Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Sanjay Dhotre the app is “one of the most important tools in fighting COVID-19”. He has also asked the officials to promote the app as much as they can and has expressed his satisfaction in the various efforts being made by several departments in the fight against COVID-19.

“The Minister was informed that 75 million people have already downloaded Aarogya Setu app on their mobile phones. He called this app one of the most important tools in fighting COVID-19 and one of the lifelines for common people during this global pandemic. He asked the officials to make all-out efforts to popularise the app.”
The Aarogya Setu app uses location and Bluetooth data from the user to tell them if they are in a safe location or not, it also tells users if they have come in contact with someone who could have been tested positive for coronavirus so that they users can stay safe and cautious.

According to the recent release statement, the Minister is also closely monitoring the Information Technology and IT Enabled Services sectors and has had detailed discussions with officials about gradually opening the sectors post the end of the lockdown. According to the statement, Dhotre has also said the government has a historic opportunity to serve humanity and that it should be utilized to the fullest with every effort to bring relief to the common people.
