According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple has been working on this feature for several months. Apple hopes to release it sometime next year or by 2024. This could imply that users only need to say ‘Siri’ followed by a command for the assistant to function correctly.

Though this appears to be a minor change, Gurman describes it as a “technical challenge” that necessitates extensive AI training and underlying engineering work. Microsoft did the same thing for those unaware of its Cortana assistant back in 2018, when it changed the wake words from ‘Hey Cortana’ to ‘Cortana.’ Furthermore, Amazon’s Alexa does not require an additional word to wake up and can be activated simply by saying, well, Alexa.

As a result, Google is one of the few key players in the virtual assistant game. It requires an additional word input (OK Google, Hey Google) for activation.
