Currently, the Meta-owned platform has capped the time duration for reels at 3 minutes. However, this could soon change as users will be able to 10 minute long reels. Mobile developer Alessandro Pauzi has shared screenshots of this new feature on X (Formerly Twitter).

Meta has also confirmed that it is working on this feature, and the screenshots are from an internal prototype. However, the company did not specify a timeline for its widespread user rollout.

The ability to post 10-minute-long reels could bring it closer to TikTok, which also has a similar limit. TikTok currently imposes a 10-minute limit for free users, while its paid tier has a 20-minute limit. It will also compete with YouTube, which allows users to post long videos for up to 12 hours. X (formerly Twitter) also added an option for its Blue subscribers to post 2-hour-long videos with the opportunity to monetize them.

It also means that “short-video” content could no longer be short as social media giants consider the possibility of extending their length. As companies like X, Instagram, TikTok and YouTube vie for the top spot in the short content format, content creators will have more options to choose from.

The line between different social media platforms is slowly blurring as YouTube, which focused on long content format, promotes its Shorts feature while Instagram, which initially focused on photo sharing, is now capitalizing on reels. It will be interesting to see what monetization benefits Instagram will offer to promote its new feature.
