According to reports, Google and Jio (Reliance Industries), one of India’s largest companies, are collaborating to develop 5G cellphones for the Indian market. Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, did say in 2020 that they and Google are working together on this project which has now been confirmed.
This time, it is Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, who has spoken out on behalf of the project. Jio, Reliance’s digital subsidiary, is the dominant telecom operator in India, which has the world’s largest smartphone market.

Last year, Jio sold a large portion of its stake to a number of companies, causing Reliance’s shares to surge. Google was one of the firms that purchased a part in Jio. By investing Rs 33,700 crore, the US-based business gained a 7.7% stake in Reliance Jio. Last year, Google invested in the startup as part of the “Google for India Digitization Fund.”
5G in India
Although India is yet to release 5G technology, multinational companies are already releasing 5G gadgets to gain a competitive advantage. Sundar Pichai stated that “, “We are focused on building an affordable phone… we are committed to making progress on the project and we are working with them (Jio).”

Google And Jio Partnership
In 2016, Reliance launched ultra-affordable 4G phones and incredibly inexpensive data plans in India, affecting the entire Indian telecom business. Many believe that they have the strongest foundation to deliver the 5G revolution to India. Mukesh Ambani has also declared that he wishes Reliance to be the driving force behind this huge change in the country.
This partnership could soon put Google-Jio-branded 5G smartphones in our hands. With 5G technology on the way in India, Reliance will be able to increase its market share even further.
