On Wednesday, WhatsApp announced a long-awaited feature that allows users to transfer their chat history between iOS and Android phones. Users have been waiting for this functionality for a long time, and up until now, if you went from an iPhone to an Android phone or vice versa, you had to rely on third-party apps, undergo complex steps, or just give up your chat history. WhatsApp provides an easy answer to this problem with the new feature.

WhatsApp Announces Chat History Transfer Feature Between IOS and Android
Users would be able to use the functionality to transfer their chat history from iPhones to Samsung phones; starting with the South Korean tech giant’s new foldable, as per the announcement at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. It appears that Samsung is hoping that this will help attract iPhone users who are impressed by its new folding phones. According to WhatsApp, the feature will soon be available for both iOS and Android and will be working on both sides.

Because of the fully encrypted end-to-end chat history on the users’ devices, transferring chats with voice notes ran into technical difficulties. WhatsApp claims to have collaborated with the world’s largest device and operating system manufacturers to achieve this.

“WhatsApp will be introducing the ability to move your entire WhatsApp chat history — including voice notes, photos, and conversations — in a seamless and secure way if you choose to switch mobile operating systems,” the company says in its announcement. “The feature means that people will be able to switch between the platforms of their choice, and take their WhatsApp history with them.”
Users of both Android and iOS systems will be able to use the feature; meaning they will be able to transfer from Android to iOS and from iOS to Android. It will first be available on Android devices, including Samsung’s newest Galaxy phones.
