OnePlus lays out the life span for OxygenOS updates as follows:
  • OnePlus announced last month its’ merger with Oppo as part of its deeper integration. To recall, OnePlus is actually an Oppo subsidiary. However, both the companies operate independently but that won’t be the case anymore it seems. Now, in a recent announcement, the company reveals it is merging its OxygenOS with Oppo’s ColorOS. This merger will aim “to improve efficiency and standardize the software experience” across devices.

Although, both companies’ software will remain separate and continue to serve their individual regions. However, they will share a common codebase. This will help in standardizing its software experience and streamline the development process for future OxygenOS updates. OnePlus says the change will also allow the company to guarantee better Android update support going forward.

OnePlus lays out the life span for OxygenOS updates as follows:

    • Flagship phones including the T and R models get three major Android updates and four years of security updates.
    • Nord and Nord CE phones get two major Android updates and three years of security updates.
    • Nord N phones will get one major Android update and three years of security updates.

On the other hand, this OxygenOS update will center on phones from the OnePlus 8 and above. This means that the older phones are out of luck in the matter.

OnePlus CEO Pete Lau had earlier said that despite a deeper integration with Oppo, OnePlus will continue to operate independently. “As for the OnePlus brand, we will continue to operate independently, focused on providing you with the best possible products and experience as we have always done. We will continue launching OnePlus products, holding events (hopefully in person soon), and engaging directly with you for feedback through the same OnePlus channels as before. OnePlus’ commitment to you remains the same,” Lau had said.
