Full Form of Computer
Lets’ address the elephant! The word computer is taken from another word, “Compute”.The meaning of compute is “to calculate”. That gives us the definition of a computer, which is an electronic device that can do calculations. However, the definition doesn’t just end here; the word computer also has a dedicated full form.
Though, some experts believe that the full form of computer doesn’t make any sense for the modern-day computer. It is, in fact, just a general-purpose understanding of what a computer could mean. There is no meaning as such about computers; however, we can conceptualise computers into two different parts.

- CU
1. ALU
Defined as an Arithmetic and logical unit, ALU is a part of the computer CPU architecture. This component is responsible for all the mathematical and logical calculations a computer performs, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
2. CU
Defined as a control unit, it is a component of the CPU that mainly deals with the scheduling of the process. Basically, the control unit part decides which task should be done on priority.
What are the types of computers?
Though it is not quite simple to categorise the modern-day computer, however, the traditional approach works best in this scenario. Basically, there are three types of computers.
- Analog Computer
- Digital Computer
- Hybrid Computer

Analog computer
The ones that no one cares about. An Analog computer is one that has all the mechanical parts. The early era of the computer was the Analog computer, which had electrical components that worked primarily on the concept of logic gates. It was bulk, heavy, and required a lot more power just to perform some simple calculations.
Digital Computer
The digital computer came in 1940, and since then, it has evolved into a form that we now call the modern-day computer. It has a microprocessor, screen, mouse, touchpads, and you name the rest of the hardware. The key concept here to understand about the digital computer is that these computers have input/output devices and the main memory in addition to the ALU, CU.
Hybrid Computer
The Hybrid computer was an integration between the digital computer and the Analog computer. The device has the speed of an analogue computer and the computational power of a digital computer. That’s the primary reason these kinds of computers are used in such areas where both processing is important.

There is no doubt that the modern-day computer is way beyond what the traditional computer was, today we don’t just have a thin-n-light notebook, we also have machine learning, AI and quantum computing. The way computer technology is changing, we will soon have another terminology. However, even then the full form of computer might still remain the same.
