Transliteration is the process of writing the same words in different scripts and vastly differs from translation. The company has also said that Hindi transliteration allowed them to provide 3.2x coverage improvement and 1.8x quality improvement. Whereas, transliterating to Odia has witnessed a 960x coverage improvement.
According to an engineer working on Google Maps,
Common English words are frequently used in names of places in India, even when written in the native script. How the name is written in these scripts is largely driven by its pronunciation. With this development, we can find the desired result from the local language query. Additionally, users can see the POI names in their local language, even when they do not originally have that information.

Many addresses in India are written in several languages apart from English. This will help people search for addresses in different languages easily. It is estimated that nearly 75% of Indians use the internet in their local languages instead of English. This means that Google Maps will only get better and more accurate with time.
