Vivo has introduced a new smartphone in its V series lineup, the Vivo V40e. The phone offers a thin and lightweight design at an attractive price point.

But is it worth considering for the design alone, and are there any other options available in the same price range? I have been using the Vivo V40e for a while, and here’s a detailed review of the new mid-range smartphone.

The phone is comfortable to hold in the hand and does not feel bulky. The 6.78-inch Full-HD+ curved panel is perfect for consuming content.

But how does the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 perform, and how does the 50-megapixel camera compare to its competitors? To find out, read my Vivo V40e detailed review.

    Vivo V40e Design And Build

The Vivo V40e boasts a familiar design that looks similar to the rest of the V40 lineup. This is the same design found on the Vivo V40 Pro and the recently launched Vivo T3 Ultra. Interestingly, I also tried using the case of the Vivo V40e on my T3 Ultra, and I was able to fit it, although it was a bit loose.

You get a cylindrical camera module that includes the dual camera setup and the Aura light. On the bottom you will find the Vivo branding in the bottom left corner.

    Design 2

I have the Royale Bronze colour of the Vivo V40e for review, and it looks magnificent. It is also available in Mint Green if you prefer a more vibrant look.

Similar to other Vivo phones, you get a thin and lightweight design measuring just 7.5mm in thickness and weighing around 183 grams. The company has also bundled a transparent case in the box so you can flaunt the phone’s design.

    Bottom Of the Phone

Coming to ports and placements, you get the volume rocker and power button on the right while the left remains clean. Similarly, there is nothing on the top, while the bottom has the USB-C port, SIM tray and the primary speaker grille. You also get an IP64 rating for water and dust resistance.

    Vivo V40e Camera

The Vivo V40e sports a 50-megapixel primary camera and an 8-megapixel ultrawide angle sensor. On the front, there is a 50-megapixel selfie shooter. Unfortunately, there is no telephoto lens, unlike other phones in this range.

During the day, the phone can capture decent images with plenty of saturation and detail. Despite the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens, you can zoom in 2x using digital zoom, and the output remains usable. I enjoyed using the camera of the Vivo V40e during the day during my brief review usage period.

However, the 8-megapixel ultrawide angle sensor is average at best and doesn’t offer the same level of quality as the main sensor. Vivo should have at least offered a 50-megapixel ultrawide angle lens since it did not provide a telephoto lens.

At night, the phone can take decent photos, although the output can sometimes be overexposed as the phone struggles with multiple light sources. Like other phones in the V series, you also get the Aura Light to help you capture better portraits, and it works as advertised.

    Vivo V40e Selfie Samples

Coming to selfies, the 50-megapixel selfie camera can take good photos with accurate skin tones and plenty of detail. Overall, the Vivo V40e offers decent cameras, although the lack of a telephoto lens might disappoint some.

    Vivo V40e Battery And Charging

The Vivo V40e packs a 5,500mAh battery that can easily last a day on heavy usage. My typical day includes watching videos on YouTube, scrolling through Instagram reels, browsing through Twitter and attending meetings on Google Meet.

Vivo has bundled an 80W charger in the box which can recharge the phone from 0 to 100 per cent in just 42 minutes.

You also get the charger inside the box, which is always welcome.

    Vivo V40e Display And Audio

The Vivo V40e sports a 6.77-inch curved Full-HD+ AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate.

It has a centre punch hole cutout and slim bezels surrounding the screen. The curved edges give it a premium look and make it ergonomic to hold in the hand.

    Vivo V40e Display Brightness

The Vivo V40e has a peak brightness of 4,500 nits, and I had no issues viewing the screen under bright sunlight.

When it comes to content consumption, it offers HDR 10+ and Widevine L1 so that you can binge-watch your favourite shows at the highest quality. I enjoyed watching Season 2 of The Diplomat on Netflix during my review of the Vivo v40e.

    Vivo V40e Refresh Rate

Navigating through the user interface feels smooth and fluid thanks to the 120Hz refresh rate. You can choose between Standard (60Hz), High (120Hz) and Smart Switch (Auto).

For audio, you get stereo speakers with the earpiece doubling up as the secondary speakers. The output is loud enough to fill an entire room, and it’s good enough for content consumption.

    Vivo V40e Performance

The MediaTek Dimensity 7300 chipset powers the Vivo V40e. I have the 8GB RAM and 256GB storage variant of the Vivo V40e for review. This 4nm chipset is found in budget phones like the CMF Phone (1) and the Motorola Moto Edge 40 Neo.

During day-to-day tasks, the phone can easily glide through most tasks, and I faced no stutters or lags whatsoever. There is also 8GB of virtual memory to help keep your apps in memory.

    Vivo V40e Gaming

When it comes to intensive tasks like gaming, you can play BGMI at 60 FPS (Smooth and Extreme) and CODM at 60 FPS (High and Max). The frame rate remained stable during gameplay, and the phone did not become warm even once.

    Vivo V40e Benchmarks

Regarding benchmarks, the Vivo V40e manages to score 1030 in the single-core test and 2872 in the Geekbench multi-core test. Furthermore, the phone throttles to 92 per cent in the 15-minute CPU throttling test and has a stability score of 99.3 per cent in the 3D Mark Wildlife Extreme Stress Test.

In the AnTuTu V10 benchmark, the phone gets a score of 678695, which is average at best given its price tag, and it has a score of 86757 in the AnTuTu storage test. The Vivo V40e is a mediocre performer, given its mid-range price tag.

    Vivo V40e Software And UI

The Vivo V40e ships with FunTouch OS 14 based on Android 14 and will receive another three years of OS updates.

As expected, you get the usual FunTouch OS experience with tons of bloatware apps- 52 to be precise. Thankfully, you can easily uninstall them from the Settings.

    FunTouch OS 14

Vivo has added some cool new AI features in the V40e- the AI Eraser and AI Photo Enhancement. The AI Eraser tool works similarly to Google’s Magic Eraser and requires an active internet connection, while the AI Photo Enhancement can reduce grain and smoothen your image.

Despite its ageing design, FunTouch OS 14 offers plenty of customization options to completely make your phone your own. I did find some of these features useful during my Vivo V40e review.

It is also worth mentioning that Vivo has been at the forefront of rolling software updates and has released stable Android 15 ahead of Google. Hopefully, the company can work on the bloatware part and revamp the user interface to make it more modern.

    Verdict

The Vivo V40e is a great mid-ranger with a good display, decent cameras and a long-lasting battery life. However, you must contend with average performance, bloatware-ridden software and the lack of a telephoto lens.

If you want a slim and lightweight smartphone that can take good photos, then you can consider the Vivo V40e for Rs.30,000. Otherwise, there are much better options available, such as the Poco F6, Realme GT 6T, Vivo T3 Ultra and the OnePlus Nord 4.
