The most recent update indicates that you will soon be able to send original resolution photographs by using Whatsapp.

Along with sketching and other tool icons, the photo quality symbol will be available at the top of the screen while sharing the photo.

However, the adoption of this feature would also result in higher data usage on your device. Because of the resolution and size of the images, it would be preferable to use Wi-Fi to download the pictures.
